The Surrey Royal Institute

The Surrey Royal Institute was a short-lived experiment funded and led by the Milliner's Guild, longtime manipulators and enemies of the Academy. The Institute taught not only a large number of wealthy students, but also a select class of Parahumans to rival the Academy's New Class.

TL;DRThe SRI Class were privileged students treated as young royalty by their mentors.

While not inherently evil, they were more likely to be callous or cruel than their New Class Rivals; that said, a number were still kind, honourable & good natured.

As well as a standard, high class education, they were also taught more occult practices, and spent plenty of time with the Masonic Milliners’ Guild.

As rivals of the Academy, the SRI had a healthy, competitive relationship with the New Class, including romances & heartbreaks. Following the school's destruction and abandonment by the Guild, the Institute’s class are considered members of the Academy.

The School colours were Red & Gold.

SRI Major Events

September 2nd, 1983, “Rivals”

Coincidentally, The Surrey Royal Institute starts teaching its first class on the very same day as the Leiber Academy's New Class. The Guild's Empress, Temperance and Magician teach at the Institute.

As well as a large number of normal human students (all from wealthy backgrounds), the Institute teaches a class of Parahuman students, obvious counterpoint to the Academy's New Class. Amongst them are the so-called Prodigal, the talented younger sibling of one of the students killed during the Lost Class’ fight with the Nameless City…

The Empress acts as both headmistress and personal tutor for the class, her lessons focusing on Parahuman superiority and political wrangling. Temperance works towards a good relation between the SRI & The Academy, teaching Parahuman relations.

The Magician teaches Esoteric practices, hermeticism, alchemy, Enochian, mathematics and basic sciences to the SRI class. He regularly gives the students thorough medical checks, making sure they meet his mysterious requirements.

The Class are referred to in internal memos by demonic names; Buer, Asmodeus, Stolas, Dantalion, Belial, Marchosias, Malphas, Sitri, Baal, & Murmur.

Dantalion excelled at D's teachings, gaining a connection with the old magician, while Belial showed great potential for *something*.

As associate members of the Guild, they are given limited access to the Guild mansion, and special ritual outfits complete with leather masks.

January 1984, “Game On!”

During their first clash, to rescue The Nerd from The Empress’ attempt to enroll them into the SRI, the rival classes immediately realise they are equally matched, and play the challenge like a sport. With the New Class rescuing their stolen member, they declare themselves the winners, this time.

What follows is at first a rivalry that will eventually bloom into a close alliance between the Academy & The Guild. In that first meeting, rivalries and romances, unrequited or not, are sown…

August 12th, 1985 - “The Fear Party”

Upset that they are confined to the school grounds, the New Class petition to host a sleepover party; denied, they go through with it anyway, choosing a night when the staff are away discussing Parahuman politics. Not only are local teenagers invited, but so are the class at the Rival School; a dare to visit the Cairn quickly escalates to a full blown party in the strangely spacious clearing around the enormous stone monument. As is usual when the Academy and the Rival School are both involved, emotions flare. Following more taunts, dares, and tests of teenage bravado, the stones are disrupted, and something escapes.

What follows is a weekend of terror, possession, confronting fears and painful truths.

News coverage for the same days describe an increased number of violent acts, unnatural weather, and general unexplained chaos across the UK.

The Cairn Child is integral in solving the nightmarish events.

November 1986, “It Only Hurts When I Sing”

The two classes mingle at a Guild charity ball; emotions run as freely as the wine, and teenage hearts are both broken and united. Temperance, tickled by the teens’ rivalry, sets up a scavenger hunt to be done during the Ball, in secret. Using their ties to the Guild, the SRI class win.

Chosen High Priestess, Lilian Eves, confronts the New Class, warning them not to interfere with the Guild's plans for the SRI. Undeterred by her treating their friends like toys, the New Class endeavour to continue their friendship, no matter the cost. One Student notes how much Eves looks like paintings of their great, great grandmother...

June 1986, “Unwanted Gifts”

When the SRI discover that the Guild is selling anti-Parahuman weapons via a third party to a mysterious buyer, the two classes compete to discover who and why. After the SRI wins by locating the warehouses the weapons are being stored, the New Class are shocked to discover the Academy's lawyer, Perry Botch, using First Class money to arm an army of power-armoured Parahuman-killing soldiers - “Paratroopers”. The Professor's child loses control and destroys many of the weapons, burning down the warehouse. Botch knows the Academy is aware of their betrayal....

Halloween, 1988; “Rodin's Gate”

At a shared Halloween party for both classes at the Academy, The Guild's Magician, the pale occultist “D”, investigates the Cairn...and using an ancient ritual, rips open an enormous gateway into the sky, from which descend demonic monstrosities and a colossal tower. Although the SRI class are unhappy fighting their mentor, both classes team up to do something about the chaos.

Everyone seems to be affected by the enormous magical vortex; inhibitions lost and demonic features growing. The thing that escaped the Cairn during the Fear Party returns, causing infighting and faster transformations. One SRI student is even possessed by a remnant of La Bete Noir…

Climbing the tower, the students are unable to stop “D” reaching a light he claims is “creation itself”, until the Cairn Child sacrifices themself to stop The Magician. Everything is sucked up into the portal, and everyone returns to normal. D seemingly escapes, but the student is gone...

September 13th, 1989; “Twilight of the Innocents”

Following his initial defeat, and seeking revenge against the Milliners Guild, Jerome Newton, alongside his Evercircling Skeletal Family, Perry Botch's Paratroopers, and hijacked ACTAEON units breaks into the Royal Surrey Institute, planning to exact his revenge against the Guild's greatest treasure; its students.

The New Class (despite Otkid's complaints) rush to the aid of the SRI. What follows is a bloodbath. The Nerd is killed by Botch, trying to save their friends, and half the SRI class die either in the destruction or at the hands of the interlopers.

The Professor arrives in the dying embers of the fires, seemingly recovered. Between the Professor and the Guild, old prejudices are reignited, and truces strained. The Guild leaves in contempt, destroying their alliance with the Academy.

Impressed, the Professor announces the New Class, and even the SRI students, graduated.
