Professor Lieber & The Academy of Change

The Professor

Born circa 1918, the early life of Professor Q Lieber is undocumented. Gifted with an understanding for learning and teaching, by 1939, Lieber had taught in Lampeter, Oxford (Trinity) and Edinburgh Universities, teaching anatomy, sociology and anthropology, interested in “unique” qualities displayed by human-specimens worldwide, especially the “heroes” documented in WW1. Joining British Military Intelligence as part of the war effort, Lieber was stationed as Military envoy to The Dandy's Matinee in 1944, and immediately sprung a close friendship with the British Hero.

Once the War was over, Lieber moved into Gielgud mansion to study The Dandy's physical prowess: by 1958, in his paper “The Science Of Privelege”, Lieber hypothesised that Gielgud's DNA was the same as any other human's, except it had an additional gene, one that granted him genetic “privelege” over other humans. In that paper, Lieber coined the term Parahuman to explain these gifted individuals; humans, but more.

With no children of his own, Gielgud left his fortune and estate to Lieber, despite the objections of his surviving other family. Lieber would continue to study and refine his theories on Parahumanity throughout the decade to follow, working with a small group of fellow interested parties: the paramilitary figure “Barracks”; Geneticist Dr Arianrhod Macllynllawr; and exemplary Parahuman M. Otkid.

Together the group studied multiple Parahumans, including themselves, travelling the world to recruit and study them up close. In Austria, the group clashed with the possessive Mr Id and their Parahuman slavery ring, the first recorded instance of a malevolent Parahuman. One early subject became so close to the Professor, that they adopted the girl; Seth Lieber, aka Thunderchild, who would later identify as male, would later be arrested and incarcerated by the Military.

Otkid's stance on Parahuman superiority would eventually sour against the others’ belief that humanity and Parahumanity could co-exist, and the gravity-controller would angrily quit. Barracks would also leave, for undisclosed reasons, and Dr Macllynllawr would establish her research facility on Anglesey.

The School would officially open in 1968, with Lieber teaching (and Macllanllwyr, when she could), teaching a handpicked curriculum of subjects, focusing on ensuring the Parahuman students would have the tools and know how to be perfect representatives of Parahuman-kind; cultured, wise, booksmart, healthy, and moral.

After the success of the First Class, the Professor would experience a roller-coaster of ups and downs over the following decades; from the disappearance and return of the Lost Class, the destruction and rebuilding of the Mansion, the conversion of students and alumni by The Peacock, to the the Academy riot. The more that happened, the more the Professor's resolve would shield them, helping them continue, despite the hard times.

The Professor would fall ill multiple times, their advanced age and rigorous teaching and study schedule not helping. Diagnosed with a wasting disease in 1983, the Professor spent the 1980s rehabilitating on Anglesey under Macllanllwyr's observation. Although it would be in remission for the next twenty years, it would flare up once more in the 2010s, resulting in Lieber being bedridden and retiring from an active role at the Academy.

It has never been confirmed if The Professor is a Parahuman or not.

The Professor's Values

Parahumans are not greater than Humanity; They are merely in a better position to help right wrongs and solve the world's ills. Parahumanity and Humanity can live in peace together through cooperation. Humanity is not inherently evil; Hatred arises from ignorance and misunderstanding. Any situation can be fixed without resorting to your genetic priveleges. Violence is the final refuge, only an answer when all diplomacy fails.

The Academy

Gielgud Mansion is an early 18th Century Mansion in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.

As The Academy for Change, its motto is the phrase that once hung over the grand entrance, now lost to violence; Omnia Mutantor. It is thought to be a mishandling of Omnia Mutantur, or Everything Changes, but in this grammatical mutation it instead reads as the poignant Everything Will Have Become Changed.

In 1958, in his will, Olivier Gielgud OBE left the Gielgud Mansion & Estate to Prof. Lieber. The Professor spent the next ten years redeveloping the estate and investing in the means to open their own private school for Parahumans; The Academy of Change.

During the end of the Lost Class’ days, the school was destroyed by the resulting collateral of the fight with The Tower. The school seemed destined to tay closed, and the land to be purchased by The Guild, if it wasn't for huge sums of money wielded by the Professor, at a time when they were thought to be destitute. The rebuilt school could accommodate more students, and featured a learning computer system with powerful security measures.

Until the mid 2000s, the Parahuman nature of the school's students was kept secret, and any breaches of such secrecy were covered up by The Professor's connections. It publicly became a haven for Parahumans in 2007, with ambassadorial priveleges awarded by the EU in the following year.

In honour of The Dandy, the school's tie colours were purple & white until 2005, where they became black / very-dark-purple & silver.

A popular rumour spread since the First Class’ days is the presence of the Dandy's “Secret Sanctum”, where Gielgud kept his Dandy-earned trophies and spoils of war. No such place has been found, and the Professor is quick to call it a prank.

The Cairn

Since records existed cataloguing the grounds the mansion was built on, notes mention the Cairn in the woods. A collection of stones, each heavy with indentations and fossil marks, stacked one upon the other in a neat mound.

Stories argue its size; from only a few stones high and painted bright blue in a 1600s survey of the then-farmland, to over two metres tall and covered in red brown stains in a groundsman’s story from 1818. It’s location is also disputed, from a clearing only a few minutes walk into the woods, to a two hour trek onto neighbouring territory, and even appearing well within the borders of the school grounds. Its origin ranges from a field animal’s burial marker, a plague grave, a place of worship, or a meaningless prank.

What is not disputed, is the monument’s unnatural nature; investigating the site has always led to stories of nausea, feeling as if being watched, and nights of lucid dreams full of velvet curtains and hot, stifling air.

From an attempt in the 60’s to produce stone rubbings (which resulted in two students vanishing for a day, unaware of the passage of time), to the ill-fated 1985 “Cairn Party”, the stones have been strongly linked to terrible and worrying events at the school. Any attempt to destroy or remove the monument has met with malign, if not immediate, repercussions, and the eventual return of the cursed stones. It is strongly believed that the Milliner’s Guild’s obsession with the school might have some links to the Cairn, what it represents, and its refusal to let go of the land.

Whatever is beyond the Cairn is referred to as “The Cairnscape”. No-one other than the Rain twins have officially committed words to paper describing it,or perhaps they just can’t...
