The First Class

The pioneer Academy students, and a team of heroes “without peer”, the First Class were originally seven teenage Parahumans from a mix of financial, ethnic, and social backgrounds, each with promising potential. In them, the Professor saw the chance to teach extraordinary individuals who could help establish, and mend, relations between the fantastic and the mundane...

TL;DR Although many of their clashes had moral undertones, and sometimes rang hollow, the First Class never had a true failure on their hands. They were recognized a s heroes, or at least vigilantes, in the newspapers even if the populace saw them as a menace.

It is worth noting that the First Class are seen as incredibly successful; almost every member went on to teach at the school, become internationally recognized businessmen, superheroes, celebrities, or at worst, joined the Milliner's Guild or Collective.

First Class Events

October 1968, “The Hunger of...THE GUG!”

The Academy opens, taking on seven Parahuman students. Although every student in the class has unique, special skills and powers, the Professor does not aim on teaching them to be superheroes, instead focusing on Parahuman / human relations… until an abnormally strong Parahuman escapes from a circus performing in Gloucester. The Gug, named after a hungry monster from a fantastical story, has long muscular arms, warty skin,an indestructible belly, an insatiable hunger, and weighs far more than a creature his size even should; driven mad by his inhuman treatment, the Gug is causing chaos, eating parts of buildings and destroying cars! The teens use teamwork to apprehend the Gug, but realize that he will never be treated right by the police, or even the Academy. They help him escape into the woods, and he promises to not cause trouble.

The Professor is saddened by the Gug's escape but proud of his students, and endorses the Class's superhero efforts, as long as they promise to focus on improving relations rather than destroying them.

December 1968, “The Illusions of BARNUM!”

Attending a Christmas fayre in Stafford, the Class becomes suspicious of stage magician and hustler Jackson Barnum, who is using illusions to steal wallets and set families against each other. It becomes apparent Barnum is mentally ill and separated from his family, alienated and unsure what to do to survive. The Class do what they can and help enroll him in a medical facility, for his own good, reestablishing connection with his wife and children.

April 1969, “In The Path of The THUNDERCHILD!”

The Class is warned by the Professor that their Parahuman foster-child Seth has escaped military custody, and is on his way to seek revenge on the Professor. Thunderchild's strength and toughness are only increased by momentum, with military and police barricades doing nothing. The Class are able to ultimately slow down Seth... and it becomes apparent that Seth wasn't looking to kill the Professor, but was seeking acceptance for his transgender life, that originally got him imprisoned and disowned. The Class support Seth, and the Professor reconnects, but there's little they can do to stop him being taken back to prison.

September 1969, “Enter… THE ALPHA!”

White-clad masked terrorist The Alpha single handedly attacks a Navy installation at Plymouth and steals nuclear missiles from a broken submarine. The Professor mobilizes the team, intent on stopping The Alpha, who was once an ally in their studies on Parahumans, but broke away due to their contrasting beliefs on whether Parahumans are superior to humans. The Alpha is not only charismatic, but makes convincing arguments about the Professor's ideas being weak and selfishly motivated. Regardless, despite arguing amongst themselves about morals, the Class deal with the immediate problem at hand, safely returning the missile to the Military. Defeated, The Alpha swears revenge, and laments that the Class are too young to realise their mistakes...

July 1970, “Into the Forest of Arden”

When one of the students is kidnapped by strangely dressed teens, the Academy discovers a Parahuman community living in a secluded forest in the South of England, uninterrupted for hundreds of years. Something strange in the woods is keeping the Parahuman inhabitants young, leading to stories of Faeries. The Class’ rescue leads to a number of the “Fae” becoming enamoured with Parahuman superiority. Following an attempted coup, and exiling the upstarts, King Auberon & Queen Titania likewise exiling the Class from returning… but one of the Fae wants to experience the outside world, and joins the Academy.

September 1970, “Glamour...And DEATH!”

When a famous model is outed as a Parahuman and subjected to hate crimes, the ladies in the Class attend Paris Fashion Week in an attempt to protect her. However, a fashion designer is killed, and a Student is implicated! The Class investigate, realising the disgraced model is actually Glammer, a Parahuman terrorist looking to protest female and Parahuman oppression in the industry...and kill dozens! She's one step ahead thanks to her precognitive partner, Jane Dunne. Exploiting a loophole in Dunne's visions, the team apprehend Glammer & Dunne, preventing the deaths, but are unwilling to accept any reward from the corporate fat cats who want to see Glammer’s defeat exploited.

October 1971, “The Dark Games of MISTER ID!”

The Professor's first Parahuman enemy, the Sinister Mr Id shows up at the mansion, only to be easily defeated. Slowly it becomes apparent that not everything is as it seems, as the Class is at each other's throats, and close to breaking apart. The Professor, worried, enrolls the help of Barnum, and using illusions, realizes that Mr Id was possessing one of the students. Forced out, Mr Id takes on its true monstrous form, and only the quick thinking and self-endangering actions of Barnum is able to pacify the villain and seemingly dissipate it. Realising the group never cared for his safety, Barnum leaves, rejecting the Professor's claims that Parahumans and humans can live in harmony, as apparently they don't even care about him...

November 1971, “We Are The Collective”

The Alpha, aided by their sycophantic toady, the acrobatic and diminutive Spaniel, recruits a team of Parahumans disillusioned by relations with humanity to be his terrorist allies. Glammer & Dunne seek revenge against the Academy, The Gug is sad living on the run, and Thunderchild hates incarceration so they are easily recruited, as are two orphans taken off the street. Barnum is recruited from the asylum, and Arden's Moth joins for fun. They take control of a free concert in London, turning it into a violent political rally. Through clever thinking, the Class set the Collective against each other, and the Alpha retreats.

The orphans are disillusioned with the Collective, and will soon defect to the Academy.

June 1972, “The Hunters Ride!”

In response to the Collective, the Government hires Military hardware designer Hayden Peters to create something to help police Parahumans. The result is the ACTAEON unit: a 6-foot tall, bobble-headed robot dressed in cloth overalls. Despite their comical appearance and awkward, doll-like walk, the units have incredible strength and resilience, are equipped with knockout gas, and are able to single out Parahumans over large distances.

September 1972, “A Mirror, Darkly!”

The Professor's fellow researcher Dr. Arianrhod Macllanllwyr invites the Professor to investigate a strange appearing-disappearing white-coral-structure off the coast of her laboratories on Anglesey. On the mysterious, alien structure, the Class find a strange black mirror, and touching it, are sucked inside!

On the other side of the mirror, the world is a firey, desolate, charred world, where the Academy is known as The Eyes Of The World, and its class serve as enforcers for the mysterious Seven Pillars of Creation. Parahumans, known here as Fallen, enslave humanity, and it is only through the actions of the black-clad, heroic Omega that humanity survive. Allying with the Omega, the Class confront the Professor's doppelganger, The Collector, and find another mirror to return home...

The Mirror is removed from the strange structure, and placed under supervision on Anglesey...

Over the months, the team would clash with The Collective, the Police, ACTAEONs, a large number of one-time Parahuman threats, and even the occasional scouting party from the Mirror World!

October 1973, “The BEAST of BODMIN!”

The team investigate a series of mysterious animal mutilations and farmer deaths up North, only to find a monstrous, bestial Parahuman. While they attempt to communicate with its softer side, it seems pointless; the monster is not only intelligent, it revels in death, wanting to reach a more dense concentration of civilization... and prey. With no other option, the Class engage the monster, determined to end its murder spree, but are no match for the savage beast… until the military step in. The Bodmin monster is a British Military super soldier, a decades old killer kept under lock and key until it recently killed its keepers and escaped. Sworn into secrecy, the Class are left to lick their wounds, terrified that not only are there monsters like “Bodmin”, but are at the beck and call of the Government...

July 1974, “Beneath the Gaze of ARGUS!”

ACTAEON creator Hayden Peters unveils ARGUS, a Parahuman-power-enhancing computer they plan to use with a convicted telepathy in order to detect and apprehend Parahumans worldwide. The Collective attack the Yorkshire facility with plans for the Alpha to use ARGUS to physically enslave Governments worldwide. The Class mobilizes in an effort to Ave innocent lives, but are ultimately unsuccessful when The Alpha gets to the device… and Glammer shoots Barnum in the back! Dunne reveals that she knew Barnum was possessed by Mr. Id for years, and knew the mind-enslaver would try to use ARGUS for himself… but she doesn't suspect Id jumping into Hayden Peters, concussing Dunne, and despite valiant efforts, ultimately gaining control of ARGUS. Id successfully gains control of all living things worldwide, creating a world where they are king without equal or competition ...

In truth, a wounded Barnum exerts himself getting to ARGUS, and using enhanced illusions, traps Id in a dream world. The Facility's structure compromised, Barnum pleads that the two teams flee; sometimes, Parahumans will fight, and sometimes they will unite to save everyone. Barnum, Peters and Mr Id are killed in the fire, and the production of ACTAEON units ceases.

The Alpha, still confident in superiority but not in meaningless deaths, seems unwilling to continue fighting the Academy. Enraged, Glammer takes control of the group and flees.

The First Class are regarded as heroes by the local area and the saved ACTAEON workers, and the Professor considers them graduated.
